History of HCM

Pillatre (pronounced “pea – yot”), Haiti, is a small town located in northern Haiti, just 12 miles from Cap Haitian. Like much of Haiti, Pillatre is a very impoverished area where many people struggle to find basic food and medicine.

In the late 1970’s, Emmanuel Laguerre (Manno), the son of a Haitian church leader, was given the opportunity to attend Bible college in the U.S. Impassioned by the need in his homeland, Manno began gathering American support for meeting the desperate needs in Haiti. During the mid-1980’s, as Manno returned to Pillatre, he answered God’s calling and founded Haitian Christian Ministries (HCM) to support the spiritual & physical needs in northern Haiti. Quickly, land was purchased and development was underway for facilities to support the growing work. Churches in Kansas, Illinois,Tennessee, Colorado, Arizona, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Missouri began investing in the vision for Pillatre.

Since 1984, HCM has developed Pillatre Christian Center. There, the pastors, educators, and medical staff support:
   • Pillatre Christian Church
   • A nationally awarded school with over 750 students
   • A self-contained medical clinic offering daily medicine and other medical treatment
   • A vocational center equipping Haitians with the skills needed to earn supporting incomes for their families

In addition, HCM has started the Christian church in the village of Lory. There, they are laying the foundations to bring the same hope and support to Lory that they have brought to the children and families of Pillatre.
